Primer

Hi, my name is Andrew. I am a 'hybrid' Designer (a.k.a. Web Designer, Graphic Designer, Sitebuilder, Usability/UX Specialist)/ Developer (a.k.a. Systems Designer, Javascript Programmer, PHP/MySQL Developer) and all around well rounded Web Guy (a.k.a. Online Marketing/Social Media Specialist, Project Manager, Technologist, or general geek-type person who can explain all this stuff in a way that doesn't make our heads hurt).
I can wear all these hats at once, or focus in and get super good at the one you need that particular month or day.

What I'm looking for

  • A full-time job in a telecommuting (i.e. working from home) arrangement.
  • A boss who is passionate about her job, doesn't mind feedback or conversations about strategy and the "big picture" and isn't afraid of change.
  • A worthy cause to sink my teeth into, something that makes a difference in people's lives.

What I can do for you

  • Have some good conversations and create a strategy on how to squeeze the most bang out of your Marketing/PR and IT budgets.
  • Remove any and all obstructions/annoyances in the way of people trying to interact with your organization online.
  • Develop and implement campaigns that foster a meaningful conversation with your partners and contributors.
  • Develop, build and maintain custom, easy-to-use applications for the various internal processes going on in your organization, so that your volunteers and employees can get their menial data entry and extraction stuff over with quickly and get back to making a difference.
  • Develop, maintain and manage your website(s), intranet and extranet sites in a way that makes sense for the particular platform, including:
    • doing it all by hand (and I really mean all, there's very few things on the net that I couldn't replicate just working by myself),
    • working with the companies we outsourced that particular job to,
    • conceptualizing and maintaining (or even building) a Content Management System that lets your employees update and extend particular sections of a site on their own.
  • I'm a quick study and love to learn new stuff - so I'm in for any additional tasks you can throw at me, as long as they involve my brains in some way.
  • By working from Hungary I'm able to significantly cut my expenses. This means that you'll have to pay me less than you would for a local professional - but I think you'll find I'm just as easy to work with and also pretty good at what I do.

What I've done to-date

  • Worked on a wide range of different Content Management Systems & Portal Engines in a variety of roles (incl. Project Manager, Systems Designer, Designer and Developer).
  • Done around 50 websites and a dozen web apps for a colorful assortment of clients - sometimes alone from conceptualization to delivery, sometimes leading small teams of 2-3 people.
  • Done all kinds of graphic design over the years including identities and logos, newspaper ads, brochures, presentations, banners, t-shirts, coffee mugs and a wine label.
  • Prior to becoming a full-time web designer in 2002, I had studied International Marketing for 3 semesters. It turned out to be an incredibly useful foundation for everything I've done since, providing a well rounded framework to understand audiences and all the different tools of communication an organization has at its disposal. I stayed heavily involved in public and employee relations at every company I've worked for, writing copy, contributing to strategic plans, organizing events, developing promotional materials and so on.
  • I've been an active blogger for a number of years, know each and every nook and cranny on Twitter & YouTube and have a pretty good understanding of Facebook.
  • Held trainings and done one-on-one mentoring in a range of disciplines including: Using the internet (2x2 hours; ~20 people), Using a particular company's intranet portal (1x1,5 hours; ~250 people), The basics of back end programming for the web (1x2 hours; 2 people), Sitebuilding with 'strict' HTML and CSS (2x2 hours; 4 people), Marketing, Online Marketing, Information Architecture and Usability (4x2 hours; 6 people), Building modern "web 2.0" applications (4 month mentoring for 1 designer and 1 developer).

Other random things about me

  • I'm a geek - passionate and a perfectionist at work, but somewhat clumsy in social situations. Despite this people generally tend to like me and I like being around them.
  • My head is in the clouds a lot, I enjoy thinking (and talking) about psychology, societal problems, politics, international relations and all other sorts of brainy stuff.
  • I like to ski in the winter and sail in the summer, I'm pretty good on the piano and a passable billiard player. I'm in love with reading but rather skeptical about the telly.
